Youll find trout up to ten pounds in the ponds at Elktrout. With 18 ponds for your exclusive use, there is great fishing all season long. The mention of Star Gulch, Pass Creek or Hidden Valley bring memories of large fish to Elktrout guests.
Before the rivers warm and insects begin to hatch, there is no better way to start the day than stalking fish at one of Elktrout's many stillwaters. Ponds have the added advantage of being relatively immune to runoff conditions or water flows.
Elktrout has 18 ponds available for the exclusive use of our guests and all within a 20 minute drive of the lodge. They range from small, crystal clear jewels to larger water with unseen depths and correspondingly large trout prowling the shores.
Because of the abundance of food, trout in the ponds grow big and strong. Rainbows, browns, cutthroats and brook trout inhabit this water, and there's no telling where the next large fish will come from.
Pass Creek produced rainbows in the 24" range with regularity this year while some of the brook trout are close to 20". As our guides would say, "What a pig!" Sight fishing to large cruising fish is possible in many of the ponds. Upper Curry's, Barn Pond, New Barn Pond and Meadow Pond are some of our favorites.
Fishing the edge of the weedbeds is another productive method in the ponds. Pass Creek, Hidden Valley and Star Gulch all host large rainbows and browns in the 21 to 28 inch class.
The brook trout in Star Gulch are getting really big, with 18 to 20 inch fish decked out in spectacular colors in the fall. Each pond has its own secrets and idiosyncrasies that provide endless challenges and variety. May and June find the ponds fishing their best.
After a winter of rest, the fish are hungry and eager. Light pressure and good fishing make this a fine time for the less experienced angler to achieve outstanding success.
Mid June brings the Callibaetis hatch to many of our ponds. Scuds, PMDs, and damselflies all provide considerable action through July into August. Leeches are another important food item throughout the summer into fall. Woolly Buggers are very effective all season long. Fall brings not only spectacular scenery but great dry fly fishing with adult damselflies and skittering caddis as well as heavy action on ants. Water boatman can produce some of the biggest fish of the year with hard, arm-jolting strikes. You'll never be bored here.
