The Elktrout Fishing Season
The Elktrout Lodge Fly Fishing Season Early Season to Mid-June
Colorado has a year round open season for trout. Our season begins at the end of May when we open the lodge for the year. The Colorado River has good midge hatches early, and the caddis are on the water from late May until the end of September. Stonefly nymph fishing can produce some large fish during this time from both the Blue River and the Colorado. Our ponds and lakes are fishing at their best during this part of the season. Light pressure and good fishing make this a fine time for the less experienced fly fisher to have extraordinary success.

Mid-June to Mid-July
Stonefly nymph fishing remains good on the Colorado River even during periods of high water runoff. Adult salmonflies will emerge in late June to early July on the upper Colorado. All our ponds are fishing well during this time with Callibaetis hatches, other mayflies, and scuds. Considerable action takes place as damselfly nymphs become active prior to emergence. Troublesome Creek really turns on with some fine dry fly action in July. Caddis hatches remain good on the Blue and Colorado Rivers.

The Elktrout Lodge Fly Fishing Season Mid-July to Mid-August
Green Drakes are hatching on the Blue. With heavy caddis, Red Quill and Green Drakes all on the water at the same time, the largest browns and rainbows in the river are feeding on the surface. This is the most exciting time on the Blue River. The Colorado River has Blue-Winged Olives, Red Quills and caddis. The ponds have good hatches of Callibaetis and other mayflies as well as scuds, damselflies and leeches. Troublesome continues to fish extremely well.

Mid-August to the End of the Season (September 30)
The Colorado River is at its best at this time of year with Blue-Winged Olives, Tricos and evening caddis. For anglers excited by large fish on small flies, fishing the Trico spinner fall can produce some memorable outings. The ponds are producing exciting dry action on adult damselflies and skittering caddis as well as heavy action when there's an ant fall. Troublesome and the Colorado produce well with hoppers. The brook trout are spectacular in color. It's a great time to be at Elktrout!
